PEACOCK PARTNERSHIP PROVIDES PRO-BONO DESIGN SERVICES FOR HONDURAS WELLNESS CLINIC

Peacock Partnership provided pro-bono design services for a Wellness Center in Wasparani, Honduras that was dedicated in June 2011. Wasparani is located in the mountains to the east of Catacamas in the Honduran province of Olancho. Before the clinic opened, villagers had to travel nearly 3 hours to receive adequate medical care at the nearest facility in Las Delicias.  The 3100 SF building serves as facilities for Predisan medical teams in order to provide emergency, illness and preventative care. Additionally, the center can be used for spiritual, educational and community needs.

The project was funded through Third Lens Ministries in partnership with Predisan.  The people of Wasparani also invested significant resources in the construction of the Wellness Center. As part of their agreement with Third Lens, the village committed labor and materials for making 3,000 concrete blocks, work teams for laying the foundation and building the center’s exterior shell, food preparation for work teams and local freight for transportation of materials.

The clinic is managed by an auxiliary nurse and operated in coordination with a health committee chosen by the community. While preventive health care — such as vaccinations, well-baby checks and routine prenatal care — is provided free of charge, patients with illnesses are asked to pay a small fee designed to give value to the services provided, cultivate dignity in the individual, and to provide a small cash fund. The clinic’s health committee uses the cash fund to purchase medicines and maintain the clinic facility, which is owned by the community.
